When you solve a TC question a lot comes in handy your broad knowledge, not only a specific insight of the vocab word per see.

The meaning of the sentence is that we should understand what Freud said in a more broad-spectrum, at large.

Sop the first blank cannot be allegorical. it is a structure of our mind. Must be A which means to understand it following usual and UNusual patterns

rather than to represent a standard and simple approach one-to-one parts. A more complex interaction among the parts which is NOT a zero sum

Something beyond. This is a question if you follow this approach, you can solve in 3 seconds or even less

A good question though

Ask for further assistance

Why not DICTATE?
Since heuristic guides and and incites, it does not plainly dictate or define relationships.
Like a tool doesnt dictate the depth of dent on a surface, laws of physics, force etc do.

Moreover, psyche itself is a metaphysical concept so how can a model show PHYSICAL relationships..... (unless ofc you go into biology of faith but that is beyond the purview of GRE, I hope)

It is a Question explaining my position on why I think the other one is right. Would it be possible to refute those arguments to show how I could eliminate that choice?

Freud’s structural model of the psyche should be understood as (i) _________ device, useful for inciting and guiding discovery, rather than as an attempt to (ii) _________ physical relationships among parts of the human brain.

Actually the meaning of the sentence is the following:

what Freaud told or taught us was to understand his predicaments via or using a holistic approach and not in a way that we could call: compartmentalization. In other words, think in a way that is NOT zero-sum, in a broader manner

Freud’s structural model of the psyche should be understood as (i) _________ device - heuristic

and this approach we should follow

useful for inciting and guiding discovery, rather than as an attempt to (ii) _________ physical relationships among parts of the human brain.

it is the correct way instead to try or attempt to depict - forcefully - a possible relationship among the parts. we should use or understand the big picture.

Let me know if it is still not clear why the other answer choices are incorrect
