Given:
5a – 3b = –9
3a + b = 31
Multiply bottom equation by 3 to get:
5a – 3b = –9
9a + 3b = 93
ADD the equations to get:
14a = 84
Solve: a = 6
Plug a = 6 into the equation 3a + b = 31 to get 3(6) + b = 31
Simplify: 18 + b = 31
Solve: b = 13
So, a + b = 6 + 13 = 19
Answer: E
