prompt: The surest indicator of a great nation is represented not by the achievements of its rulers, artists, or scientists, but by the general welfare of its people.
There are currently seven continents and about one hundred and forty four countries, having a distinct culture. Each nation has gone through certain progress of time, facing difficulties and triumphs. A prosperous nation indicates a rich culture and heritage. it is true at least for the most countries. The argument takes a positive stance on the indication of a great nation in terms of general welfare available to its citizens. In my opinion, I mostly disagree that an eminent nation displays its greatness solely based on how the citizens are taken care of for the following reasons. Though i do concede that it isn't possible for a nation to flourish without any general welfare.
First of all, the eminence of a nation is indicated by how well it citizens are educated, particularly in arts and science. For example, the Germany which made education free, funded by the tax money of it’s citizens have enabled every citizen to complete their education in the field of science, art and other fields. Germans Engineers are known as the pioneers of Mechanical engineering which is heavily dependent on science. The cars they manufacture are known throughout the world. Volkswagen is one of many examples translating to the “people’s car”. By providing the opportunity and encouraging the development to be made in the field of science, the invention and the development of automobiles has led to the nation achieve such great progress marking it as the land of automobiles.
Second of all, the citizens of a great nation should be free to elect their rulers, allowing them to choose who will guide them. It should be democratic in nature. A perfect example of a democratic nation is the India, which is known for its largest democracy. Every five years, the elections are held to elect the prime minister representing the nation and also the regional elections to elect their prime minister representing a state. The people are allowed to choose any candidate that they like as the prime minister, their ruler who can guide them towards prosperity. This isn’t the case with the countries such as the North Korea where the dictatorship is in place, clearly showcasing its depravity by stripping its citizens of freedom from choosing a leader. It is visible in their citizens, where only the upper class is allowed to opt for better facilities, while the middle and the lower class suffer and have no option to either endure, or escape it or no longer handle the tyrannical nature of their ruler and expire from it.
However, it is not necessary that a nation is prosperous due to the fact that it has made a good progress in science, arts and in politics. Every nation has this one problem that is impossible to overcome just because of its overall progress, poverty. No matter how good a nation is, a certain group of people will always face some unfortunate consequences. Not every one of us could access the facilities such as medical, technological etc, due to reasons such as discrimination on the grounds of race and religion. For example, in The India, we could witness the problems of homelessness, racial discrimination etc. This is particularly visible in the people belonging to lower cast, never to have a good life. This is where the welfare services and also strict laws preventing the above-mentioned problems come into action. The Indian government has made it easy for the people of lower cast to have reservations in government jobs and in college admission providing an opportunity, facilitating the growth of the unfortunate. However, this has led to a serious problem where the deserved ones, who are more qualified to have job opportunities are often overlooked in favour of the reserved ones. Here in my opinion the welfare services of India should facilitate the unfortunate ones to have access good education and medical facilities for free which gives them the opportunity to improve themselves, learn skills to actually be deserving of the job opportunity and for the education.
In conclusion, I believe that a prominent nation should display a great progress in science, arts and politics, indicating that it has flourished with good facilities and opportunities with no discrimination in place but also it should support the people who can’t able to access the fruits of the progress it has made by allowing them to be deserving.
