First, we can assume that all the tick marks on the line are evenly-spaced; the image is not marked as "not to scale" so it's safe to think that it is, in fact drawn to scale.
Next, we can see that it lies between -1 and -2 on the number line. This will help us narrow down the answers: it must be -1.25 or -1.75.
Now, notice that the x is closer to -2 than to -1. That means, it must be -1.75.
