Why can't it be "soporific". As it means sleep-inducing, the smell could protect the wolf by making predators fall asleep or make them drowsy.

The sense is that they emit a stinky or dirty odor to push away the enemies.

Soporific means lethargic or asleep.

Not any good

One issue is that the word soporific does not have a good match when compared to the other choices.
