Re: The dearth of natural resources on the Australian continent [#permalink]

Can someone explain how A is an answer for question #2? Obviously the passage states that there is economic hardship in the Weatern territory and that tourism is higher there but it doesn’t seem like there is any clear evidence provided that implies or affirms that the aborigines have any connection to the Western territory specifically

Please, refer to my explanation above. I made explained all three answer choices, highlighted in the passage why they are all three correct.

Thank you for your explanation, Carcass.

But, would you please give me more explanation about the second choice in the second question; "increasing dominance by European norms and lifestyles".
I can't find any clues about dominance or Europeans.

Thanks

I agree with Mahdi1989.

Although the passage does talk about tourism, the western society and non-aboriginal people, can we infer about "increasing dominance by European norms and lifestyles"?

Your doubt is legit. However, here is where ETS is really clever and craft outstanding questions.

Basically, the second question could be inferred from the passage as a whole.

The natives do not wanna that certain sites are the object of mass tourism by the people. On the other hand, the Gov struggle with this because it is a huge resource for the economy.

Quote:
If non-Aboriginal people are forbidden to visit these natural wonders, many may choose not to vacation in a region that sorely needs the income generated by tourism.

The Australian government has dealt with this dilemma thus far by trying to support both sides

This dilemma is strictly related to the norms and styles of western society. Instead, the natives are more conservative and they are more in armony with nature. Make sense now ?? :)

Moreover, the second passage clearly shows this problematic issue

Quote:
Unfortunately, this otherwise rosy prospect has one significant cloud on the horizon. In recent years, there has been a move towards returning some of the land to the Aboriginal people. As Western society and culture have flourished on Australian soil, tribal people have been forced ever farther inland in an attempt to maintain their traditional ways of living, a desire that the government has striven to respect.

Hope now is clear.
