Re: A placebo is a chemically inert substance prescribed more f [#permalink]
A placebo is a chemically inert substance prescribed more for the mental relief of a patient than for its effect on the patient's physical disorder. It is prescribed in the hope of instilling in the patient a positive attitude toward prospects for his or her recovery. In some cases, the placebo actually produces improvement in the patient's condition. In discussing the use and effect of placebos, a well-known medical researcher recently paid physicians the somewhat offbeat compliment of saying that physicians were the ultimate placebo.

By comparing a physician to a placebo, the researcher sought to imply that

(A) physicians should always maintain and communicate an optimistic attitude toward their patients, regardless of the prognosis

(B) the health of some patients can improve simply from their knowledge that they are under a physician's care
As the passage states placebo affects mental condition rather than physical, thus patients will mentally stabilize if they know that they're under professional care.

(C) many patients actually suffer from imagined illnesses that are best treated by placebos
(D) physicians could prescribe less medication and achieve the same effect
(E) it is difficult to determine what, if any, effect a physician's behavior has on a patient's condition

The placebo is given to patients to boost positive attitude in them. It sometimes improves patients condition. The researcher is basically saying that the physicians are ultimate placebo. This means that they also act as placebo, as patients feel safe around them. This improves their mental health.

By comparing a physician to a placebo, the researcher sought to imply that

(A) physicians should always maintain and communicate an optimistic attitude toward their patients, regardless of the prognosis

Communication is a key to illness, but researcher is not implying that. Placebo induces positive vibe among patients. Placebo as a chemical substance doesn't cure illness. It is patients that feel comfortable taking the drug. If physicians are placebo, then it is patients who feel comfortable around them.

(B) the health of some patients can improve simply from their knowledge that they are under a physician's care

This works because here physicians role and placebo drug role are the same. Patients feel improvement with knowing that they are under physicians care as much as they feel the same when taking the drug without knowing its actual effect.

(C) many patients actually suffer from imagined illnesses that are best treated by placebos

Placebos work sometimes, but the researcher is not saying that physicians also cure imagined illness just like placebos do. Physcians actually prescribe medicine or treatment for any illness.

(D) physicians could prescribe less medication and achieve the same effect

The level of medication used by physician is not mentioned in the passage.

(E) it is difficult to determine what, if any, effect a physician's behavior has on a patient's condition

It is not relevant to the passage. Out of scope.
