Why is it not Recrimination - Counter or mutual accusation?

The answers mean indeed reply. This is what Churchill gave.

Always understand the real meaning of the entire sentence.

Hope this helps.

Can someone please tell me why "retort" is not the correct answer? I thought Recrimination and Retort are having the same meaning.

\(retort\) is indeed the correct answer. Along with \(rejoinder\).

\(recrimination\) means accusation. We need a word that means reply/revert.

Sorry for the late reply. By mistake, I mentioned rejoinder somehow. I meant Recrimination. I thought recrimination can also be an answer in terms of replying back or attacking back someone. So, on what basis we should reject the Recrimination.

Clearly we are looking for a word that means a sharp and quick witted reply.

Clearly only retort and rejoinder fit the blank!

If you look at Churchill's reply, it was sharp, quick and witty. A recrimination is an accusation in response to one from someone else. Is Lady Astor making an accusation against Churchill? Is Churchill replying with an accusation directed towards Lady Astor?

The mood is humorous and not accusative.

A retort or a rejoinder is a sharp and quick-witted response.
