Well, in this case, they are the best options.

Not necessarily the two words must be equal or a true synonym. They must fit, giving an alike meaning to the sentence using both words.

Of course, they are a different meaning but in the context could both fit

captious means inclination to express petty objection. to put it in the sentence would not make similar context to the one if we put irascible. I believe nettlesome fit better in this.
