i dont undestand this question.impede means obstruction,so if impeding my opponents play costs me strokes then i have to come last to win the game.so favourable options ate anticipate and underscore.i know they don't go together but i don't understand this question.

meaning of scotch is "decisively put an end to."

so how does this fit w.r.t the context of this sentence
understood stymie here but confused with scotch I feel D or E should be other correct option here

A and F are the same: put end to or prevent a progress.

Ask if something still is unclear to you.

No, it is has a meaning which is apposite to the meaning of the sentence.

Basically you have to stop your opponent

You can't choose words that do not go together, that goes against the rules of sentence equivalence. The sentence says 'even when impeding his or her progress costs you strokes'. Here you need words that mean 'to hinder or hamper or obstruct'. If you go through the words you'll find that only scotch and stymie fulfil that purpose.
