Nightmarish means = very frightening or unpleasant

So, the meaning of the sentence is: even though the description of the dystopian novels could be a little bit exaggerated not means that those scenarios are not so far from the truth.

Those depictions are prophetic: they anticipate somehow the future scenarios.

Blank (i)

Nightmare depictions ...should by no means diminish the ----------- power of these works, VISIONS they CONJURE UP are reflected ...

Here visions are something related to future and these are reflected that means some thing like PREDICTION should be the word. E suits here.

Carcass..official solution plz

The question says, actually, that even though the dystopian novels such as those from Orwell, Dick or others are a bit exaggerated, that does not diminish at all the fact that the same novels depict a future world that probably will come true.

Matrix docet.

So the right word is E: prophetic.

Hope this helps.

Basically a sentence made difficult to grasp due to a quixotic language to appear even more difficult from what indeed it is, misleading the students.

The answer is prophetic because the word means to describe or predict what will happen in the future. In the last sentence, it states that "many of the visions they conjured up...are reflected in many totalitarian governments TODAY". So, the depictions of the dystopian novels of the 20th century have predicted some of the values present in common day politics.

The sentence fragment "for many of the visions they conjure up are reflected, albeit in less vivid form, in many totalitarian governments today" clearly indicates that what was imagined or invented in these works became true, thus prophetic is the right choice.
