Re: The premise that corporations are (i)___________to the opinions of the [#permalink]

Hi,

The sentence is saying that as the all-present Board of directors' businesses are almost universal that a change in a system is a waste only.

Puissant means powerful but here we need a word that conveys that BODs businesses are everywhere.

Please ask if the doubt remains.

This was easy. For three blankers, read and understand slowly what the sentences are implying.

The premise that corporations are (i)___________to the opinions of their stockholders is a concept underlying much of modern investment advice. But in a world where the exhortations of even the largest shareholders are (ii)___________by many of the world’s biggest companies, it can be difficult to imagine how these monoliths might be influenced.

The first sentence tells us that in the corporations, the opinions of the stakeholders are taken into consideration and it is the basic premise in the modern investment advice. So subjected to

Second starts with BUT.
It means that exhortations (persuasions) of even the largest stakeholders are dismissed by many big companies.
trivialized and disregarded

Though most large companies are publicly owned, businesses with omnipotent boards of directors are so (iii)___________that changing the current system seems almost futile.

The big companies are public ones but the board of directors are everywhere and their businesses are so spread out that changing the system is a waste.
pervasive

Hello.

In the third blank, why we ignoring "Puissant" ?
