Sorry my bad, why "quixotically" does not work for the answer?

forgetting that canines have evolved in competitive environments in which emotional coddling was a sign of weakness.

They forget that dogs after all are wild, in ancient times. We have domesticated for our purposes, such as also the horses.

So, often, they are treated too kindly.

The words you pointed out is out of scope: it means behaving not in a usual pattern, randomly. Clearly, it is wrong

Many dog owners treat their pets too _______, forgetting that canines have evolved in competitive environments in which emotional coddling was a sign of weakness.

Blank (i)
(A) aggressively
(B) quixotically
(C) fortuitously
(D) indulgently
(E) belligerently

Here Canines in general means dog family. Dogs are competitive and most dogs evolve in competitive environment - If you pamper them or coddle them emotionally, they will become weak for competitive environments.

When many dog owners treat their pets too indulgently, they forget that their dogs will become weak for competitiveness.
