pique : a feeling of irritation or resentment resulting from a slight, especially to one's pride.
crescendo : a gradual increase in loudness in a piece of music.
euphony : the quality of being pleasing to the ear.
sidereal : of or with respect to the distant stars (i.e. the constellations or fixed stars, not the sun or planets).
woebegone : sad or miserable in appearance.
erroneous : wrong; incorrect.
ethereal : extremely delicate and light in a way that seems not to be of this world.
effulgent : shining brightly; radiant.
haggard : looking exhausted and unwell, especially from fatigue, worry, or suffering.

I don't think crescendo works here, because it means: a progressive increase in intensity. However, we know that the shelling both stopped and started suddenly. The other two options for (i) don't work either.

Agree with you that the other 2 options don't work here, but "crescendo" is fine, it also has a figurative meaning - that is the highest point reached after progressive increase in intensity. Hence is the best fit for the blank.
