We have one car that has 22 mpg
the other has 30 mpg

find the least common multiple.
22= 11*2
30=5*3*2

11*2*5*3 = 330 miles

330 miles= 22mpg *x gallons
x=15

330 miles = 30 mpg *y gallons
y= 11

11 gallons+15 gallons=26 total gallons spent

330 miles ahead and back = 660 miles

660/26= 25.38

the answer is B

22 miles need 1 gallon, therefore, 1 mile needs 1//22 for A to B. Similarly, 1/30 for B to A.
1+1= 2 miles need (1/20 +1/30) = 52/660 gallons
Now, 52/660 gallons need 2 miles for entire journey
Therefore, 1 gallons need= (2*660)/52 = 25.38
so, Answer is B

50% wrong means that most are straightway taking the average of two mileages

That is going to be wrong, as it will be wrong for average speed question too..

When you are travelling same distance in two different speeds or different mileage, the average of total will always be LESS than the arithmetic mean of the two

so here B is the mean, so will be greater than A..

The best way would be to take the LCM of two speeds or mileage as the distance one way as also shown above by Happymathtutor.

so LCM of 22 and 30 is 330...
1) fuel used while going = 330/22=15
2) fuel used while returning = 330/30=11

distance = 330+330=660
fuel used = 15+11=26
Average = 660/26 = 25.38 <26
hence B>A

2*22*30 / (22+30) = 25.38 < B

frankly I do not know Sir. That formula is best for work/rate problems when you combine the work.

here is a distance rate problem which, yes, is under the same umbrella but slightly different
