Answer: C

Total number of workers = 200 = Men + Women
Smoking = 0.1 * Men + 0.49* Women

Since 0.49*Women must be an integer, then the lowest value for Women is 100, the other values can be 200.
So we have either 100 Women and 100 Men then Smoking = 0.1*100+0.49*100=59 OR
200 Women and 0 Men, that is impossible because it is said that 10percent of Men smoke.
The answer is C.

I think because the distribution of men and women is not given, we can obtain different values for the number of smokers. Therefore, the answer must be D

Since there are 49% of the women who smoke and the no of women will be integer therefore the no of women will be multiple of 100.
Minimum Value of no of women will be 100 , In this case no of Men will be 100 .
Therefore the 49% of 100 + 10% of 100= 59, which makes quantity A and quantity B equal .
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Next value of no of women will be 200 which makes No of men=0, which is impossible as it is given that 10% of men Smoke

So the Answer is C

Yes we dont know whether there are equal no of men or women or not. So the ans should be D.

For (1/10)M+(49/100)F to be an integer then M must be divisible by 10 and F must be divisible by 100.

Since M+F=200
Then F has to be 100 — it can't be 0 nor 200.
By default M then has to be 100 as well.

so total smokers is 10+49=59

Final Answer: C

This trick here is to recognize that this is a real world question, and that the number of smokers must be an INTEGER.
For example, we can't have 17.4 female smokers.

GIVEN: 49% of the females smoke
If F = the total number of female workers, then the number of female SMOKERS = 49% of F = (49/100)F
This tells us that F must be a multiple of 100, otherwise, the number of female SMOKERS will not be an INTEGER
For example, 49% of 100 = 49, 49% of 200 = 98, 49% of 300 = 147, etc
Conversely, 49% of 50 = 24.5, 49% of 75 = 36.75, 49% of 60 = 29.4. etc

Since there are 200 workers in TOTAL, the number of females must be either 100 or 200
However, since we're told that 10% of the males smoke, we know that there must be at least 10 male workers.
So, there can't be 200 female workers, which means there must be 100 female workers.

We now know that there are 100 female workers and 100 male workers.
49% of 100 = 49, so there are 49 female SMOKERS
10% of 100 = 10, so there are 10 male SMOKERS
TOTAL number of SMOKERS = 49 + 10 = 59

Answer: C

The answer should be D I guess.. As mentioned by many in the comment section, we do not know the distribution of males and females. the 200 workers can be with the following distribution :
200 females + 0 males (since the question has not mentioned that there is atleast one male in the group), which will give an answer of (0.49*200)+(0.10*0) = 98.
