Re: The preceding stem-and-leaf plot shows the ages in years of 44 US [#permalink]

Quantity A: Mode of the Data Set

Look at the leaf side and see if in any row there are numbers which are repeated. Find the number which has repeated the maximum number of time in one row -> that's our mode!

So, 4 in second row has occurred the maximum number of times (5)
=> Mode is 54 (5 is Stem and 4 is leaf)

Quantity B: Median of the Data Set

There are 44 values. So Median will be the mean of \(\frac{44}{2}\) term and (\(\frac{44}{2}\) + 1) term
=> Median = Mean of 22nd and 23rd term
To Find 22nd term we will go from first row and count the values
22nd term will have a leaf of 4 and step of 5 making it 54
23rd term will have a leaf of 5 and step of 5 making it 55

=> Median = \(\frac{54+55}{2}\)= 54.5

Clearly, Quantity B(54.5) > Quantity A(54)

So, Answer will be B.
Hope it helps!
