Jan and Marko are competing in an off-road race. Jan completes 3/4 of the race in 2 hours. Marko completes 2/3 of the race in 5/8 of the time it takes Jan to complete 9/10 of the race.

Quantity A
Quantity B
Jan’s rate
Marko’s rate

A)The quantity in Column A is greater.
B)The quantity in Column B is greater.
C)The two quantities are equal.
D)The relationship cannot be determined from the information given.

Kudos for the right answer and explanation

Let's assume that the race is 200 miles.

Time*Rate = Work

For Jan the equation is: 2*Rj = 150 (3/4 of 100)

Rj = 75

For Marko the equation is 5/8*2Rm = 180 (9/10 of 200)

Rm = 180/(10/8) = 18*8 = 144

Marko's rate is greater.

Here Rate means Speed and Rate = \(\frac{Work}{Time}\)

Rate of Jan = \(\frac{0.75}{2} = 0.375\)

Time take by Jan to complete \(\frac{9}{10}\) distance = \((\frac{0.9}{0.375}) = 2.4\)

Now,
Rate of Marko \(= \frac{0.66}{0.625 of time taken by Jan to cover 0.9 distance}\)

\(\frac{0.66}{{(0.625)(2.4)}}\)

\(\frac{0.66}{1.5} = 0.444\)

Col. A: \(0.375\)
Col. B: \(0.444\)

Col. A < Col. B

Hence, option B

Jan and Marko are competing in an o?-road race. Jan complete [#permalink]
Sorry for those who love fractions (not my case).
Maybe integers (with some concession for decimals) can help...

Using the denominators (4*3*8*10). Say the race is 960km long.
Jan completes 3/4 of it (720km) in 2 hours, which is a rate of 340km/h.
Marko completes 2/3 of the race (640km) in 5/8 of the time it takes Jan to complete 9/10:
9/10 of the race is 864km/340 = 2.5 hours (rounding).
5/8 of this time is 1.6 (rounding).
640/1.59 is 408km/h

So Mark is faster :)

I think the answer should be D because the question does not state that Jan and Marko are competing at a constant rate. We will have to assume that Jan will complete 9/10th of the race at the same rate as he completed 3/4th of the race, which may not be true. (Perhaps Jan stops for a nap after completing 3/4th of his race, lol!)
