Re: QOTD # 11 Of the students in a school, 20 percent are in the [#permalink]
Hi Brent,

Would the answer have been 15% if the question asked "what percent of students are in the science club but are not in the band?" So in this case it would be students who are in science but not in band over the total number of students. I think the reason I got confused with the original question was because I was finding the percentage of students who were in science and not in band from the overall total number of students instead of calculating the percent as a total of students who took Science.

That's correct.
15 percent of all students are in the science club but not in the band.

Cheers,

Could you solve this using Venn diagram please? I'm getting the answer as 15% only, how is it not in the options only?

I think it makes more sense to have you show me how you arrived at 15%.

Sure. I've taken two overlapping circles - Science club & band. Assuming X as the total strength
Science club= 0.2X
Band= 0.3X
Only Band= 0.25X
Therefore, Band or Science= 0.3X - 0.25X= 0.05X
Only the Science club could be easily found out by subtracting 0.05X from 0.2X, which is 0.15X
This is the percent of the students who are in the science club who are not in the band right. So the answer should be 15%
