If x is 1, 2, or 3 and y is either 2 or 4, then the product xy can have how many different possible values?
A. Three
B. Four
C. Five
D. Six
E. Seven
Here let us put the values of x and y and find different possible values
xy= 1 * 2 = 2
xy= 1 * 4 = 4
xy= 2 * 2 = 4
xy= 2 * 4 = 8
xy= 3 * 2 = 6
xy= 3 * 4 = 12
Hence there are 5 different values, because the value 4 appeared twice
