What is the value of \(2 \times \sqrt[5]{34}\) approximated to the nearest integer?

A. 13
B. 8
C. 5
D. 4
E. 3

\(\sqrt[5]{32} = 2\)

\(\sqrt[5]{243} = 3\)

Since 34 is wayyyyyyyy closer to 32 than it is to 243, we can conclude that \(\sqrt[5]{34}\) is just a teeny bit bigger than 2

So, \(2 \times \sqrt[5]{34} =\)(2)(a number a teeny bit bigger than 2)
= a number a teeny bit bigger than 4

Answer: D

Are we able to use the calculator for this kind of question? Does test calculator have options of squaring and square rooting any numbers?

The onscreen calculator has a square root key, but not a 5th root key.

Here's our video on the GRE's onscreen calculator:

GreenlightTestPrep, can you please explain what may be a good approach to use to mitigate the risk of overestimation? How to avoid selecting 5 instead of 4?

Good question!!
Keep in mind that this was not an official GRE question.
I suspect that, if this were an official question, they wouldn't have 5 as an answer choice (does that requires us to be a lot more precise).
