We can solve this question using matching operations (my favorite Quantitative Comparison strategy)
Given:
Quantity A: \([x+(x+1)]^2\)
Quantity B: \(x^2+(x+1)^2\)
Let's first simplify Quantity A:
Quantity A: \((2x+1)^2\)
Quantity B: \(x^2+(x+1)^2\)
Expand and simplify both quantities:
Quantity A: \(4x^2 + 4x + 1\)
Quantity B: \(2x^2 + 2x + 1\)
Subtract \((2x^2 + 2x + 1)\) from both quantities to get:
Quantity A: \(2x^2 + 2x\)
Quantity B: \(0\)
At this point, we can see that...
If \(x = 0\), then the two quantities are equal
If \(x = 1\), then the two quantities are NOT equal
Answer: D
