Total acres: x
Cost per acre: p
Therefore, cost for x acres = xp
Now, out of x acres y acres were ruined by locusts, so remaining acres is (x-y)
Cost per acre for the remaining acres : q
Total cost : (x-y)*p
W.K.T,
Profit = Selling price- Cost price
= (x-y)*q - x*p
Hence, the right answer is option A

Essentially, while the farmer cultivated x acres, locust reduced the amount of acres he was able to harvest and then sell, so that total revenue is given by q(x-y), where q is the sale price and x-y is the total amount of sold corns.
The gross profit, which is the Total Revenue - Total Cost, is then given by
q(x - y) - xp, which is option A.
Notice how the answer choices also have the trap choice of (x-y)(q-p) in which the information on the locust is not accounted, thus making the choice to be wrong.

. I can't help but imagine how unmotivated my son will be when he learns that he would be useful if he became a farmer, for example. He likes playing this farming simulator game, but I doubt it's a good enough stimulant for him to start putting a lot of effort into his math homework. Like, when was the last time knowing how to determine the angles of a triangle helped you in life?
