Hi, I solved it like the follow:
let the salary at the beginning be 800
Thus 5/8 will be 500
Therefore 300 remains out of which 1/3 is used
hence, 200 remains which actually is $40
Last step, using unitary method we can say that
when the remaining amount for other expenses is 200, the salary is 800
Therefore when the amount is 40, the salary will be 40*800/200
Ans- 160
