The hint for blank i is "purgation", meaning purification. Since criminal justice should enable purgation, it has to provide the community a "chatarsis", which means emotional release.

Blank ii is to be filled by something meaning refuse/condemn because in order to be purified, the community needs to condemn the transgression. Among the choices "outrage at" is the best fit.

I don't think I ever saw the word "purgation" in my entire life. It does however resemble the word "purge" which means "to get rid of something".

only catharsis and outrage fit. Even if you dont know what purgation means, none of the other words would create a sentence that makes sense.

1. The part of the sentence that is related to blank (i) is this:
An essential purpose of the criminal justice system is to enable purgation to take place;

2. The part is positive in tone because of the word “purgation”. The only choice that is positive in tone and similar in meaning to purgation is “catharsis”

3. The part of the sentence that is related to blank (ii) is this:

4. a community expresses its collective (ii) _____________ the transgression of the criminal.

5. The part is negative because of the word “transgression”. “Transgression” is an absolute negative word. So it has to be an absolute negative word that fills the blank which is “outrage”
