Here's why disparate and divergent are the best choices:
- Disparate: This means fundamentally different or distinct. It accurately describes the core difference between the professors' goal of tenure and the students' goal of a good education.
- Divergent: This means tending to move apart in different directions. This word perfectly captures the idea that the two groups have aims that are not only different but are also in opposition to each other, pulling the university system in conflicting directions.
The phrase "at the expense of pedagogy" highlights this divergence and makes both words excellent fits for the blank.
