Why is author's attitude towards literary historians in second paragraph cited as 'receptive' ?

1st Question.

You have to look at the tone of the passage, and the fact that it's none of the other choices.

As the works of dozens of women writers have been rescued from what E. P Thompson calls "the enormous condescension of posterity and considered in relation to each other, the lost continent of the female tradition has risen like Atlantis from the sea of English literature.

Several women of literature are rediscover and their job evaluated again under a new light. Thompson use a metaphor for this about the raising of the lost continent atlantis

It is now becoming clear that, contrary to Mill's theory, women have had a literature of their own all along.

The theory asserted by Mill tells us that the women did not have so much importance in the literature but this was not true (comparison)

The woman novelist, according to Vineta Colby, was "really neither single nor anomalous," but she was also more than a "register and spokesman for her age." She was part of a tradition that had its origins before her age. and has carried on through our own.

The sentence above tells us that women in English literature and their jobs were more than important

according to the third question, we have to find what is described or is in the first paragraph and then, as the process of exclusion, what is NOT in the first portion of the passage. That is our answer.

In the first paragraph, the author makes use of all the following techniques EXCEPT

A) extended metaphor

Yes. A metaphor is a word or sentence that is used to refer to another thing in order to show or suggest that they are similar. See the Atlantis continent

B) enumeration and classification

This is NOT in the first paragraph. In any form. This is our CORRECT choice

C) classical allusion

allusion is when we say something without pointing out exactly the terms or modality.

See: It is now becoming clear that, contrary to Mill's theory, women have had a literature of their own all along. This is the same to say that the theory is bogus

D) direct quotation

We have plenty of quotation marks in the first portion of the passage

E) comparison and contrast

Yes. We do have also this

The woman novelist, according to Vineta Colby, was "really neither single nor anomalous," but she was also more than a "register and spokesman for her age." She was part of a tradition that had its origins before her age. and has carried on through our own.

We have a comparison from the till then scenario: women were not important but in reality they were in literature and beyond

B is the answer.

I hope now is clear
