yet this so-called (i)_______ —mainly because he directed his censure at the church you can probably guess the answer by reading this , much only.
Key Part: censure at the church, disapproval of the church, non-conformist of the traditional beliefs. And there is a close synonym in the answer choices with this and it is heretic.
heretic: a person holding an opinion at odds with what is generally accepted.

History has recast the 15th century Florentine monk Girolamo Savonarola as a rabble-rousing zealot lording over the "bonfire of the vanities”; yet this so-called (i)_______ —mainly because he directed his censure at the church—was a crusader for austerity and thus a check on a papacy that had run a course of profligacy.


They called him heretic because he directed his censure at the church but in actual he was staunch austere/ascetic.
