Re: For much of the twentieth century, paleontologists theorized [#permalink]
I don't understand why we didn't choose option B as well in the last question. In the passage, it does mention " similar sized mammals" and that they didnt require much food. So why isn't the answer to the last question A AND B?

Regarding Question 2

I marked answer option D.
As per passage, These scientists, however, based their conclusions on faulty reasoning, theory 1
Supplanting this theory, theory 2

Their role is to highlight what is at the core of the old theory. I.E. they are there to say that the old theory probably is wrong.

Supplanting this theory is an entirely new line of thought: dinosaurs were actually mesothermic

Therefore, they serve as rejection.

Hope now is clear

Why A is correct for third question. It never says in passage that mesothermy led to high speed than ecothermy. Secondly in start it says reptiles are ecothermic but it only means reptiles are subset of Ecothermic and may be some other ecothermic species X is faster than dinosaurs

By taking this middle ground, some paleontologists maintain that dinosaurs were faster than similar-sized reptiles yet did not require as much food as similar-sized mammals.

A is correct

Thanks for the reply. I am still unable to convince myself if this information is enough to say that mesothermy is the reason for the greater speed as it looks from the answer choice. How do you find this info from passage?

Supplanting this theory is an entirely new line of thought: dinosaurs were actually mesothermic, neither warm- nor cold-blooded.

By taking this middle ground,

some paleontologists maintain that dinosaurs were faster than similar-sized reptiles
