Let b = the # of students who joined the class, c = the # of students who were initially in the class.
20a = the total combined years of ages in the initial class
17x = the total combined years of ages in the group of students who joined
Given that the new average of all the students is 19:
\(\frac{{17x + 20a} }{ {x + a}} = 19\)
\(17x +20a = 19x +19x\)
\(a = 2x\)
20a = the total combined years of ages in the initial class
17x = the total combined years of ages in the group of students who joined
