Use the area of the circle to determine the area of the square, then subtract the area of the circle from the area of the square to determine the shaded region. The formula for area of a circle is A = πr2. If you substitute the area of this circle for A, you can determine the radius.
The radius of the circle is 1, therefore, the diameter of the circle is 2, as is each side of the square. A square with sides of 2 has an area of 4.
\(A=4-\pi\)
