the answer should have a tie to the overall content of the passage. The passage primarily focuses on caloric intake. However, choice B is only the alternate causal assumption, whereas choice C has the link to the overall essence of the passage.

thus, the correct answer is C.

Also, what we know is

high levels of aspartame may trigger a craving for carbohydrates

But that doesnt mean - aspartame is the only trigger available, people who do not use aspartame probably might/might not be using some other substance, which we are not aware (which is out of scope)
