Governments should offer college and university education free of charge to all students.
Write a response in which you discuss the extent to which you agree or disagree with the recommendation and explain your reasoning for the position you take. In developing and supporting your position, describe specific circumstances in which adopting the recommendation would or would not be advantageous and explain how these examples shape your position.
The assertion made in the statement is the one with which I don’t fully agree. There should be some charges on college and university education.
Those who contend that making college and university education free of all charges make higher education accessible to all are ignoring the numerous problems it brings with it. Firstly, it will devalue the higher education. With everyone having a university degree, there will be higher competition in the industry for jobs than earlier when college graduates have the advantage.
Secondly, there are many financial factors to consider. If the charges from students are waived off, how will the universities function? Funding from various sources such as alumni for development of the institution will not be enough to incur all the costs of the institution. Salaries of the workers will become a major issue. To compensate for that, funding to the institution will be channelised to pay these workers. This will impede the growth of an institution.
Government funding to the institutions will be on the backs of taxpayers. This can make them agitated from the government. Although, these students start working around the age of 25 , there will be greater number of job seekers. This will reduce the salaries of these students. Thus, they will not earn enough that they hope for because of the higher education which has now become devalued.
At last, I contend that making higher education free of any charges is, while an ambitious thinking, not practical at all.
