Hello, I'm confused with the phrase :
a certain number of girls joined the class just as twice that number of boys left the class

I translate it
for girls = 2x
because the girls' number equals twice that of boys. May someone explain pls?

Look at the explanation provided by Brent just above. There is nothing to add to that.

it is so simple yet efficient and cristal clear.

On Monday, a class has 8 girls and 20 boys. On Tuesday, a certain number of girls joined the
class just as twice that number of boys left the class, changing the ratio of girls to boys to 7 to 4.
How many boys left the class on Tuesday?
why we can't reduce the 8 girls and 20 boys in the ratio of 2:5 and solve?

Hey,

We are given whole no of boys and girls. So no need to reduce that to a ratio.
And even if you do it,

Let's say girls : boys = 2:5

A certain number of girls joined the class just as twice that number of boys left the class, changing the ratio of girls to boys to 7 to 4
The equation will be like this:

\(\frac{2x + y }{ 5x - 2y}\) = \(\frac{7}{4}\)

Now we will have to deal with \(2\) unknown \(x , y\) with one equation only. So not possible.

Just one thing sir, whatever given in the stem - do not make it more twisted. This one is very easy, just solve and move on.

Ask if something is unclear.

Regards,
R

The phrase of the question could be better than it is.
