It doesnt mention a,b and c lie on a straight line, so you cant know the distance from a to c

I just wanted to add one more important point here.
We do not know whether they are in a straight line or not. So, we cannot find the exact distance between them.
One thing we can say is that the distance between A and C will be from 2 km to 8 km, both inclusive.
So, the answer is D.
Note: Had the quantity B be anything more than 8 or anything less than 2 we would have got the answer as B or A respectively.

And those will be 5 + 3 = 8 km and 5 - 3 = 2 km respectively.
