During a sale these regular unit prices are discounted at different rates so that a total of $9 is saved by purchasing 5 pairs of jeans: 3 pairs of Fox jeans and 2 pairs of Pony jeans. This one was tough.
Let x = % discount of Fox jeans
Let y = % discount of Pony jeans
x + y = 0.22
Since we are looking for the % discount of Pony jeans, let's solve for x in terms of y:
x = 0.22 - y
Now, we are told that the total discount for 3 pairs of Fox jeans originally costing $15 each and 2 pairs of Pony jeans with original price of $15 is $9. Given that information, we can write this equation:
3(15)x + 2(18)y = 9
Substitute and solve:
45(0.22-y) + 36y = 9
9.9 - 45y + 36y = 9
-9y = -0.9
y = 0.1 -----> 10% ====> Answer Choice B
