“Initially” signals a time shift. At first, Montreaux was declared or trumpeted as an important person in cinema. But then he experienced a precipitous or steep decline after his meteoric (or sudden) rise to fame. Therefore, the answers have to be synonyms for declared or trumpeted. [A] identified is close but is a little too neutral and isn’t part of a synonym pair. Only [C] hailed and [E] lauded work. [B], [D], and [F] all describe what likely happened after the decline, but the blank describes Montreaux’s “initial” reception.
