In order to incur the least possible cost in fuel, the car must be driven on the highway for the entire 420 miles, so that the higher mile per gallon figure applies. The number of gallons of fuel required for the trip is given by 420/34=17 1/2 gallons
The minimum possible fuel cost of driving 420 miles =
$3 * 17 1/2=$ 52*1/2
