Hi Carcass,
I was going over this question. I'm not sure why it is D. I see that the emphasis you placed in life making you choose the answer D.
However the sentence begins by saying, "If a ruler’s self-evaluation in life", since a ruler's "self-evaluation" cannot happen after death, isn't the choice "Failure" better suited?
