Look for the structure and flow in the sentence. It's basically a contradiction: despite the arguments of some "heavyweights" that animals should be treated fairly and equal to humans, ecology sometimes favors treating animals in ways that might be considered unfair. What would suggest unfairness?

The discussion is about doing something to “some members of a species...to prevent the devastating effects of overpopulation.” Something like “removing” or “getting rid of” would work in the blank. Protecting and reintroducing don't make sense; they are theme traps. Depleting can apply to a resource, but not to individuals. Murdering and culling are both types of killing, but culling is the better option since it is a technical term for killing individual members to avoid overpopulation. (Bonus: if you understand this sentence, you've got a handle on one of the key debates among environmentalists.)
