I might be wrong but my approach to choose anecdotal is - Loch Ness Monster is a mythical creature part of a folk tale. Loch Ness Monster here is a specific element which resonates with anecdotal evidences. You don't need to imagine it because you're told it is part of a folklore so that you can connect with the story.

If it were to be an improper noun which has various degrees of interpretation -- for eg. "lion-headed goose" -- you'd need to imagine it. Then imagined would be correct.
