Notice the word contrast at the beginning of the long sentence

Though

The melodramatic novel (notice the word drama, which means something sad) is NOT perfect, nonetheless, it encapsulates the essence of the melodrama itself: the drama, suffering, and pain of people. However, in a moment everything could change for the better, and becomes happy.

Even though the novel was flawed (with negative sides) and shows the extreme conditions, poverty, and sadness of people. The thing could change all of a sudden.

I hope now is more clear

Carcass, what clues in the sentence that the first blank should be flawed?

Happy to reply to your question sir.

I do belive that most of the students rely on clues. This is OK. After all the clue itself put us on track tot he correct answer.

However, rarely I hear a student says: what is the meaning of the sentence because the meaning incorporate the clue and it is way more important. The clue gives to you only a partial view of the whole picture

With that in mind

Though Griggs's melodramatic novels often have been dismissed as artistically (i)___,

If the novel is dismissed then WHY is dismissed ? because it has some sort of weakness. If it is dismissed it cannot be accomplished or fiendish. Even though I do not know the vocab in C surely has nothing related to dismiss

I argue that melodramatic form productively aligns with the novel's thematic focus on labor and class mobility.

The novel form meets certain criteria even though it was dismissed for some reason. Therefore the novel has positive sides but it is often dismissed. From that, we can infer that the novel itself is flawed.
