Background information you need to know: the four quadrants of the coordinate system start in the upper right quadrant at I and go counter-clockwise so that the upper left quadrant is II, lower left is III, and lower right is IV.
In quadrant IV, x coordinates are positive but y coordinates are negative. Thus, x must be positive. In quadrant II, x coordinates are negative but y coordinates are positive. Thus, y must be positive.
If both x and y are positive, then point (x, y) must be in the upper right quadrant, which is quadrant I. So the answer is A.
