It is given that while noting down a quadratic equation Lauren noted the coefficient
of ๐‘ฅ incorrectly and got the roots 7 and -2, whereas Harry noted the same equation
and noted constant term incorrectly and got the roots of the equation as -11 and 6.
We need to compare
Quantity A: Larger of the two roots of actual quadratic equation
Quantity B: 3
Now, the standard form of quadratic equation is ๐‘ฆ = a๐‘ฅ
2 + ๐‘๐‘ฅ + ๐‘, where ๐‘Ž โ‰  0 and
๐‘ and ๐‘ are constants.
Since, Lauren got ๐‘ wrong and the roots are 7 and -2 so the equation becomes ๐‘ฆ =
(๐‘ฅ โˆ’ 7)(๐‘ฅ + 2)

i.e. ๐‘ฆ = ๐‘ฅ^2 โˆ’ 5๐‘ฅ โˆ’ 14

Since, ๐‘ is wrong so the actual equation has ๐‘Ž = 1 and ๐‘ = -14.
Similarly, Harry got ๐‘ wrong and got the roots -11 and 6 so the equation is ๐‘ฆ = (๐‘ฅ + 11)(๐‘ฅ โˆ’ 6)
i.e. y = ๐‘ฅ^2 + 5๐‘ฅ โˆ’ 66
Since, ๐‘ is wrong so the actual equation has ๐‘Ž = 1 and ๐‘ = 5.
Hence, the original equation is ๐‘ฆ = ๐‘ฅ
2 + 5๐‘ฅ โˆ’ 14.
Factorizing we get, ๐‘ฅ^2 + 7๐‘ฅ โˆ’ 2๐‘ฅ โˆ’ 14 = 0
i.e. ๐‘ฅ(๐‘ฅ + 7) โˆ’ 2(๐‘ฅ + 7) = 0
i.e. (๐‘ฅ + 7)(๐‘ฅ โˆ’ 2) = 0
i.e. ๐‘ฅ = โˆ’ 7 or ๐‘ฅ = 2
Hence the larger of the two roots is 2.
