Not sure if this is the correct method, but this is how I found the answer:
Area of a triangle = 1/2 * (b * h)
Area of the shared area = 1/2 * (b*h) + 1/2 * (b*h) = 12
From the point (-4, 0), the height for both triangles is 4.
The base for the top triangle is (7-a). The base for the bottom triangle is (5-a)
Simplify the shaded area equation and substitute the base and height information:
(b*h) + (b*h) = 24
(7-a) * 4 + (5-a) * 4 = 24
28 - 4a + 20 - 4a = 24
-8a = 24 - 28 - 20
-8a = -24
a = 3
Choice C.
