Prompt: People who make decisions based on emotion and justify those decisions with logic afterwards are poor decision makers.
It is often true that passion rules reason. The mark of a good decision maker is making sure that reason leads the way. The prompt states that people who make decisions based on emotion and justify those decisions with logic are poor decision makers. In my opinion, I strongly agree with this statement for three reasons.
First, making decisions based on emotion leads to suboptimal outcomes that may not be the best for the decision maker. For example, individuals that are planning to take an MBA need to make sure that it is a calculated decision. In the hypothetical scenario that they select an MBA because it felt "right" at the time, they may soon come to regret it because they are foregoing two years of salary and job experience to pursue the MBA. It may lead them to an even worse position than before because they did not adequately rationalize the decision before choosing to push through with it. They may rationalize it later on that it was worth it, but by then, the harm has already come to pass. With this example, it illustrates that these suboptimal outcomes stem from the failure to consider the decision rationally, hence, this very same group of people would make poor decision makers.
Second, justifying the decision after the fact leads to individuals feeling even more regret. People are more likely to over justify their decisions after the fact if they immensely regret that decision. These people need to remind themselves that the spur of the moment decision was right to feel better about themselves. To illustrate this, let's assume a hypothetical situation. Imagine an individual makes a spur of the moment shopping decision. The individual felt that it was right to purchase a very expensive item and upon purchase, immensely regret it because of the hit to the wallet. They would make all sorts of rationalizations to say that the item was worth it to make themselves feel better. They have a compulsion to repeat these rationalizations to assuage their guilt but all it does is exacerbate their guilt because they constantly remind themselves of this splurge. Consequently, good decision makers feel "satisfied" or "content" with their decision because they took the time to rationalize it before pushing through the decision. It is not enough that
decisions are made, it is even more important to be able to live with these decisions.
