At a residential society, 30 percent of the families have 5 or more vehicles per family and 40 percent of the families have 3 or fewer vehicles per family.
If we consider the total to be 100% then it means that 30% of families have greater than 3 and less than 5 vehicles i.e. 4 vehicles ( vehicles always whole number)
thus to calculate median , let us set up the below categorical table
3 or fewer vehicles - 30% of total
4 vehicles - 30% of total
5 or more vehicles - 40% of total
So median would be (n/2 + n/2+1)/2 = (100/2 + 100/2 +1)/2 = (50+51)/2 = 50.5% of the total , which lies in the category of 4 vehicles , thus the median number of vehicles per family = 4 , answer C
