My solution:

Original time: y/x

After the workers were added, they had (80-y) houses left and worked at 1.25 rate.

New time: (80-y)/1.25x

Add new to old: y/x + (80-y)/1.25x = (80+0.25y)/1.25x

Now they are asking "the total time is what fraction of the original time", so the total time goes into the numerator:
(80+0.25y)/1.25x divided by 80/y is the same as (80+0.25y)/1.25x multiplied by x/80, which gives us (80+0.25y)/100 = 0.8 + 0.0025y
