Gary always resented the way people (i) _________ television. If he ever mentioned a program he had recently watched he was always met with reprimands from others. They told him how television was a waste, how it rotted his brain. The (ii) _______was staggering: Gary knew that these same people also watched television; they just denied it in public in order to put on airs. And what was so sacrosanct about the other forms of media? There were trashy novels, just like there were trashy television programs.

The fact that he was reprimanded when he mentioned to others that he had watched a program on television and also told him television was a waste of time and it rotted the brain clearly proves that they derided television.
There is a long explanation for the word for the second blank after the colon. It says that the people who publicly denied watching television did so to feel superior and they actually watched it privately. The only word that explains this kind of behaviour is duplicity.
