How would 18 be A and not 'E'?

If the flock is flying east initially and a storm blows them southwards they are now flying in a south eastern direction, correct?

Now if the flock has no idea and it assumes it's flying east (based off what it understood when it started flying) then it'd continue flowing in the same direction, which is now southeast due to the storm.

Can anyone explain if my logic is correct and if it isn't where I went wrong? Thanks.

But compass sense alone cannot explain how birds navigate the ocean: after a flock traveling east is blown far south by a storm, it will assume the proper northeasterly course to compensate

Think this way, they fly east which is the zero point, straight.

A storm pushes the flock to far south so in terms of dislocation is minus (negative ) 5

They then move too far north to compensate the -5. so in the end back on track to zero

Northeasterly compensates the far south. back on the balance

A is the answer

My Understanding - Take out the compensation factor. Then the birds should be flying eastward and end up south of its intended destination. So answer is East - A

Carcass, for q18, why it is east but not north?

The bird will be blown to north to compensate south. How the bird will end up in the east?

The black pointer. When you say northeast it is essentially toward more the east than the north

Carcass, can you please explain why it is northeasterly? Where did you get it in the passage?

I answered these in this order: 18, 19, 20, 17. I went back to 17 because it's an "overall tone" question, which is easier to answer after you've dug into answering other more specific questions.

18 - If a flock is traveling east and they're blown off course, you'd assume that they keep going east if they didn't have the right natural navigational tools to get to the right spot. Answer is A.
19 - Options C through E distort information in the passage. Option A misses the ironic tone. Answer is B as the phrase "but this would demand" implies an opposite, or irony.
20 - Slightly trickier. Notice that D and E are too analogous to each other, so neither can be right. C implies that the elephants are just roaming and exploring. Option B invites too many other ways in which the Bison could be navigating other than magnetic sense (e.g. maybe they recognize other landmarks). Option A is the right answer as it's the most analogous to a situation in which an animal has no other choice but to use magnetic sense, as there's no other means of determining where they're going.
Back to 17 - I was caught between options B and E. But E describes the structure of the sentences (each of the ideas does, in fact, replace the former) rather than the overall meaning of the passage. By comparison, Option B aligns with the tone of the passage, the introductory sentence, and the majority of the examples denoted in the passage. Answer is B.

I didnt get your 18th explantion , if they are blown by wind their direction might change and when they dont have any instrument - like you said how they would recourse on their path again ? considering they were travelling east previously

northeasterly means to the north bu the direction is prominently toward the east as the wind rose shows to you above

I do not see how to explain further because I have explained from every angle above :(
